[003] [audio] opening shift

[Filtered to Sanji and Yukito]

Hey Sanji-san, it's Kinomoto Touya--we met, uh, under weird circumstances I guess. I really wasn't myself, but I remember you!

And I remember you had a restaurant here, right? A friend of mine and I are kind of looking for something to do--we're getting a little tired of the ongoing vacation--and we both have restaurant experience. So if there's something you need done around your place... well, I can't provide references, but we've been waiters since we could work.

So... what do you say?

Make sure you both cook different dishes. No copying.

[And with that said, Sanji chooses to go dead silent, alternating between bowing his head, eyes closed, and then watching with an unreadable expression.

Impress him, guys. 8|]

[Woah, woah, they're doing this separately? There's an uncomfortable thought: competing with Yuki. Well, it doesn't look like they have much choice. And if they both do well, then they're both in, right? If one of them slips up, though...]

You handle the main course, I've got the dessert. [He rolls up his own sleeves and washes up while Yuki's going through the fridge.]

[Touya's spent most of his employed life as a waiter, but he did work at this one crepe place where he had to actually make them on occasion. He had some presentation practice there. And sometimes he'd put swirls on Sakura's pancakes and things...]

[He decides that sticking with what he can do best is probably better than trying to do something crazy-fancy and failing miserably. Banana, honey, and almond sounded like the best way to go. Once Yuki's cleared the refrigerator, he takes his turn to find what he needs.]

[Main course, hmm? Yukito gives Touya an encouraging grin and sets to raiding the provided ingredients. His official resume might not include "chef" but he's had to keep up with his own not-insignificant appetite for several years now -- when it comes to cooking in volume he knows what he's doing. He'd prefer his own kitchen and ingredients he'd picked out, but beggars can't be choosers and there's certainly a good selection here.

He rummages through the supplies, murmuring thoughtfully to himself as he gathers chicken, vegetables, rice, and mushrooms, among other things.]

Cream stew? With rice, but... ah, chestnuts! Chestnut rice, that'd go well with it. And winter themed....

[Touya seems to know what he's going to do, so Yukito just sets to work, humming happily to himself and not paying too much attention to Sanji in the corner.]

[Once the both of them really start on their respective dishes, Sanji will push off from the wall to circle around, staring like a hawk - still very silent, but assessing at the same time. He keeps very careful watch over their movements, their techniques, and their efficiency]

[Where Touya lacks technique, he makes up with speed. He's used to doing things quickly and accurately, not dropping anything, et cetera. The way he prepares things though is almost devoid of flourish, probably due to cooking for a family of three (sometimes six...). Not much time for showmanship--which means the presentation part of this was going to be hard on him. He had sandwich cutters to make Sakura's sandwiches into various shapes. If they could only work together. Yuki was king of the decorative bento.]

[For now, he focuses on the dish itself. He's making the crepe itself with rice flour--it's a Japanese dessert crepe, after all--and starts chopping the almonds into long slivers while the first side is cooking in the pan. Fortunately he can do this without cutting himself, despite almonds being a finicky thing to cut.]

[Hm, no ready-made roux. Ah, well, he can deal with that part. Yukito starts the stew first, so it can simmer while the rice cooks -- chicken, potatoes, carrots, celery, mushrooms, then he pauses and quickly adds some broccoli for extra color and smiles, pleased by the effect. He peeks over at Touya to make sure things are going well, throwing a grin his direction before turning back to start on the rice.

Everything he does is neat, efficient, and precise, showing the ease of long practice. Sometimes he wonders about that, given that he knows only the last three years of memories are true ones, but... that's getting into territory Yue won't talk about, so he doesn't bother asking. He's simply pleased with the fact that he can quickly reduce a pile of mushrooms and scallions into neat, even pieces before adding them to the pan for the rice.]

[Hmmm. Well, it's fairly obvious these two have been in the kitchen before. Far better than what he expected in Yukito's case, and Sanji's not one to mark down serious points for lack of flourish. Rest at ease for now, Touya - it's the end product he'll get nit-picky over.

He's seen all he needs to, in terms of their prepping, retreating back to the wall until they're finished]

[Touya's a little nervous with Sanji looking over his shoulder while he works (figuratively speaking), but he's never had someone watch what he was doing so intently. As long as it was edible, Yuki, Fujitaka, and Sakura didn't care how he made what he made. Maybe he should've brushed up on some stuff before they came here...]

[Still, he does have one good trick: he can flip the crepe without using a tool to do it. That was how real men did it.]

[He lays out the fruit like scales on a fish, then drizzles on the honey (not too much--bananas have some sweetness too, after all) and sprinkles on the almonds. Once it's done and on the plate, he slides it into the oven to keep warm until Yuki was done.]

[With everything all put together and simmering, Yukito just needs to wait for it to finish cooking. In the meantime he's started working on getting out dishes and prepping leftover herbs for garnish, and he glances up as Touya sets his plate in the oven.]

If you have a minute, maybe a salad to balance it out? There are some greens and daikon... sesame dressing would probably blend well.

[Suggestions aren't cheating, right? They still work together, even if Touya does the actual work for that.]
